Common mistakes to avoid
I coordinate rush orders for industrial control components at a company that supplies Finder relays and other control gear. Last quarter alone, we handled 47 rush orders with a 95% on-time delivery rate. In that role, I've learned one important thing about evaluating PLC manufacturers: a PLC is only as reliable as the components around it.
This is not a brand review. It's a 7-step checklist I use when we're qualifying a new PLC manufacturer, an alternate source, or a supplier who wants to be our strategic partner. If you're an OEM buyer, a distributor, or a maintenance manager who specifies both PLCs and the relays, timers, and VFDs next to them, this is for you.
Before the checklist: the mistake I kept making
When I first started sourcing PLCs and control components, I assumed the biggest factor was price. I was wrong. Price matters, but the real risk is whether a manufacturer understands the system around the PLC. A PLC doesn't run alone. It needs 24VDC relays for isolation, timers for sequencing, contactors for loads, and VFDs if there are motors. When I compared two suppliers side by side—one with a huge catalog and one with a narrow focus—I finally understood why component-level knowledge matters. The generalist had a catalog. The specialist could tell me the exact Finder relay series and why the coil suppression mattered.
The 7-step checklist
1. Ask for the full control package, not just the PLC
Ask the manufacturer where they draw the line. Do they only make PLCs? Do they source relays and timers from outside? That's fine. But if they claim to do everything end to end, ask for specifics: who makes the 24VDC relays? Which timer distributor do they use? If they can name a specific Finder relay series, like 55.34 or 60.13, they know what they're talking about. If they give you stock photos instead, that's a red flag.
Honestly, I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises. A supplier that says "this isn't our strength" is more credible than one that claims to be perfect at everything.
2. Check the relay specs down to the coil
For PLC outputs, the relay coil voltage is usually 24VDC. But "24VDC relay" is not a complete specification. You need the coil type, contact rating, pin arrangement, isolation, and whether the coil includes a suppression option. We use finder relay 24vdc products as a benchmark because the range covers standard coils, gold-plated contacts, and LED indication. But you still have to verify the exact series. IEC 61810-1 is a solid baseline for relay safety requirements, and UL 508 covers the industrial control equipment. If a supplier can't produce a datasheet showing these references, don't proceed.
3. Ask about lead times in a real emergency
In March 2024, a packaging OEM called us 36 hours before a line restart. Their PLC had failed, and the original manufacturer said the nearest module was four weeks away. The penalty for missing that deadline was $50,000. We found the replacement from a local distributor at a rush price, and the line started on time. That experience changed how I qualify suppliers.
Now I ask every PLC manufacturer: what is your normal lead time, and what is your emergency lead time? Can they ship one box overnight from a local stock? If they can't answer this for a standard part like a Finder relay, they probably won't be helpful when a more complex PLC module fails.
4. Look at compatibility from the panel inward
Will the PLC talk to the VFDs you're using? Does the HMI support the same fieldbus? Does the timer card match the timing ranges your old relay timer used? I've grown to distrust the phrase "compatible with everything." In industrial control, there is no everything. A VFD manufacturer might be excellent at drives and weak at safety relays. That's why I ask for a written compatibility matrix, not a verbal promise.
5. Treat documentation as a deliverable
If a manufacturer can't or won't share the following items, walk away: exact part numbers, datasheets with dimensions, CE and UL declarations, software firmware versions, and end-of-life notices. For the relay portion, this means a datasheet for the exact series, not a generic electromechanical relay sheet. I've watched a timer distributor lose a sale because they couldn't answer whether the 55.34 relay family was still in production. The buyer needed an answer before Friday, and a vague "should be fine" wasn't enough.
6. Ask about lifecycle and end-of-life policy
PLCs get designed into machines that run for 10-15 years. Relays and timers get replaced more often, but they need the same footprint and wiring. Ask: what happens when a processor goes end-of-life? Is the replacement guaranteed? For Finder relays, a direct replacement is usually available from the current catalog. For PLCs, that's not always true. Get the answer in writing before you commit.
7. Run a low-risk trial order under time pressure
Don't start with a full line integration. Pick one critical component—like a 24VDC relay or a PLC expansion card—and place an order with a tight but realistic deadline. In our own operations, we processed 47 rush orders last quarter with 95% on-time delivery. But we've also seen vendors who shine in sales meetings and then fall apart when asked to ship one box by Friday.
I once went back and forth between an established vendor and a new one for two weeks. The established vendor was more expensive; the new one promised 25% savings. On paper, the new one made sense. But the project was too important to risk on a company we hadn't tested, so I went with the established vendor. That experience confirmed that a small paid test is worth more than any sales presentation.
The "we do everything" trap
A PLC manufacturer doesn't need to be good at everything. They need to be excellent at their slice of the machine. One of my best supplier relationships started when the vendor said, "This isn't our strength—here's who does it better." That honesty earned my trust for everything else. When you hear that sentence from a PLC manufacturer, don't read it as weakness. Read it as a boundary. And a boundary usually means focus.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a PLC only on price. The relays, timers, contactors, and VFDs around it will often cost more than the CPU itself.
- Assuming "24VDC relay" is a complete spec. You still need coil, contact, isolation, and suppression details.
- Waiting until an emergency to test a supplier's emergency support. Looking back, we should have tested ours earlier. At the time, standard lead times looked safe. They weren't.
- Skipping lifecycle questions. A relay is easy to swap. A PLC firmware revision is not.
Bottom line: evaluate PLC manufacturers the same way you evaluate any supplier—on specific parts, under realistic conditions. If they can handle a rush order with the exact Finder relay 24VDC, the right timer distributor, and a compatible VFD manufacturer, they're worth a bigger order. If they claim to do everything and then can't answer one follow-up, keep looking.
