Common mistakes I've made so you can avoid them
I manage purchasing for a 140-person electrical controls distributor in the Midwest. The part I order most often is the Finder 40.52.7.024.0000. That breaks down as a 40.52 series, 2 pole, 24VDC coil, plug-in socket. If I type 'finder relay 24vdc' and grab the first listing, I might get a 55.34 timing relay instead.
Check these before you ask for price:
- Series and contact configuration (2 CO, 4 CO, etc.)
- Coil voltage and coil type (DC, AC, sensitive)
- Contact material and rated current
- Socket or PCB mounting
- Approvals you need for the final product
One missed character in a Finder part number can turn a 10A power relay into a 5A signal relay. Then you explain to your customer why the panel failed on a bench test. Not fun.
2. Ask for relay compliance requirements before the quote
Most buyers focus on price and lead time. They forget to ask about the paper.
Here's the thing: a relay is a component. The panel builder who buys from you will need data to support their own certification. If you're selling into Europe, they'll ask about RoHS and REACH. If you're selling into North American industrial panels, they'll ask about UL 508. If a supplier claims 'UL listed' or 'RoHS compliant,' ask for the certificate. Per FTC advertising guidance, claims need substantiation.
When a supplier shows me a quote, I ask for three things:
- Manufacturer datasheet, current revision
- Declaration of Conformity or test report
- Lot traceability or country-of-origin info
If they hesitate, that's a red flag.
We had a vendor once that couldn't provide a proper invoice for a $4,200 order. Finance rejected the expense report, and I ate the cost from the department budget. Since then, I verify documentation capability before placing any order. Relay compliance requirements are the same thing. If they don't have the paperwork, you don't have a real product.
3. Check the actual 24VDC coil specs
Not all 24VDC coils are the same. Finder makes standard, sensitive, and low-power coils. If your PLC output card is rated for only 0.5A, you might need a sensitive coil version. If you're wiring a relay directly from a 24VDC switch-mode supply, a standard coil is usually fine.
Check the coil voltage tolerance. Most Finder relays have a broad operating range, but pickup and drop-out specs matter for certain applications. Read the datasheet. Or ask. It takes two minutes and saves you from shipping the wrong part.
4. Treat VFDs and drives differently from relays
A relay is a commodity once you've verified the part number. A VFD is not.
When you're buying drives wholesale, margin is one thing. Support is another. I've watched buyers chase the lowest per-unit price and then spend weeks trying to figure out whether their motor matches the drive ratings.
If you're evaluating a VFD distributor, ask these:
- Do they have application engineers on staff, or is it just order-taking?
- Can they confirm the drive's input phase and voltage against your motor?
- What happens if the drive needs a callback to the manufacturer?
- Do they stock spare parts locally, or does every replacement ship from overseas?
I learned this in our 2024 vendor consolidation project. We switched one supplier because they were $2,300 cheaper across the first order. Then their support process turned a 30-minute programming question into a two-week email thread. Cheap, but not worth it.
5. Scrutinize 'drive wholesale' quotes line by line
The word wholesale is a search tag, not a promise. A wholesale quote can still include minimum order quantities, pallet fees, or a high freight charge.
When comparing wholesale prices, I make a simple table:
- Unit price
- MOQ
- Freight to my door
- Payment terms, net 30 vs pre-paid
- Documentation included, datasheet and conformity
- Return policy for surplus or defective parts
The cheapest quote often stops looking cheap after line 3.
I'm not saying low-priced suppliers are always bad. I'm saying the price you can defend to your finance person is the total cost, not the bait price.
6. Keep a cross-reference file even if you think you don't need one
After 5 years of managing procurement, I've come to believe the 'best' vendor is highly context-dependent. The same Finder Relay can come from several channels. Keeping a file of old part numbers, discontinued series, and cross-references has saved us more than once.
Keep a simple spreadsheet with:
- Manufacturer part number
- Coil and contact info
- Preferred supplier
- Typical lead time

Industrial control components change. Series get refreshed. Approval requirements evolve. Not every part will be around as long as you need it.
The 'buy direct from the manufacturer' thinking comes from an era when distributors only added margin. Today, a good distributor is the one who tells you which Finder series is likely to be superseded next year and points you to the equivalent. That's rare. When you find that supplier, keep them.
Common mistakes I've made so you can avoid them
- Only comparing unit price. The wire-to-wire cost includes freight, documentation, lead time, and the risk of a wrong part.
- Assuming '24VDC' means the entire spec. Verify the coil tolerance, contact load, and series. '24VDC' is a search term, not a specification.
- Ignoring relay compliance requirements until the last minute. It's not a boring paperwork phrase. It's what prevents a panic call from quality when a shipment gets stuck.
- Ordering VFDs from whoever has the lowest price. A VFD distributor with real application support is usually worth more than a 3% price gap.
- Not asking about long-term availability. If a relay series is approaching end-of-life, you need a plan, not a surprise.
Is there a perfect supplier out there? No. We've had good quarters and bad quarters with all of them. But if you run these steps before every PO, you'll catch most of the problems before they become your problem.
My experience is based on maybe 200 orders of industrial control components, mostly for 24VDC panels and small motor control systems. If you're buying high-voltage switchgear or custom OEM relays, some of these checks may look different. That's okay. The process is the same: verify the part, verify the paper, and verify the total cost before the money moves.
