  1. Traceability. Ask for the manufacturer's serial numbers and batch records for the specific units in stock. If a supplier cannot tell you where a safety PLC came from, treat it as a counterfeit risk.
  2. Safety documentation. The supplier should provide the safety manual and declaration of conformity for the exact model and firmware version. In practice, the common functional safety references as of early 2025 are IEC 61508 (2010 edition) and ISO 13849-1 (2015 edition). If they don't understand why those matter, treat it as a warning.
  3. Applications support. Can they read a PLC output wiring diagram? Can they explain the difference between a relay coil voltage and a contact rating without checking with their sales manager? If not, they are just a pass-through reseller.
  4. Real stock visibility. 'In stock' should mean a shelf in their warehouse, not 'can probably get it in three weeks.' For a wholesale order, ask for inventory records or photos.
  5. Failure process. Ask what happens if a safety PLC fails after three months. Do they replace it, send it for analysis, or refer you to the original manufacturer? The answer tells you how they treat long-term customers.
  6. OEM/private label support. If you are an OEM, ask about private labeling, kitting, and supply agreements early. A wholesale source that only sells off-the-shelf can still work, but you need to know that before you build your line around them.

What most people don't realize is that authorized distribution and technical competency are two different things. Authorized means the manufacturer allows them to sell. It doesn't mean they can help you apply the product. I've gotten better technical support from a small specialist than from a large distributor who mostly moves boxes.

The Finder relay 24VDC mistake I keep warning people about

Now the component detail that caused one of my dumbest mistakes. I ordered a quantity of Finder relay 24VDC modules for a PLC panel. In my head, the '24VDC' described the whole relay: coil and contacts. It doesn't. It describes the coil voltage. The contact rating is a separate specification on the datasheet.

It's tempting to think a relay is a relay, and 24VDC is 24VDC. But if the contact rating is designed for AC loads, switching a DC load through it is a different problem. DC arcs don't self-extinguish the way AC arcs do. The same relay might be perfectly fine for a 24V DC coil and still have a much lower DC contact rating than its AC rating suggests.

The mistake cost us a day of commissioning and an emergency parts order. Nobody got hurt, and nothing caught fire. But it taught me to read the contact rating column, not just the coil voltage. A specialist who knows their limits is more useful than a generalist who overpromises.
